Boston is a beautiful and vibrant city filled with art, culture, history and great food. It is tempting to want to see it all! There is so much to see and do in the Back Bay/Copley area of Boston alone — you could spend the whole day there. Check out our suggested itinerary for the best spots to go with your children!

If you’re looking to explore more of Boston, check out our family-friendly guide to Boston Common, the Public Garden, and Beacon Hill or our guide to Faneuil Hall, Government Center, and the Greenway.

How to get there

Take the T (the Orange line or Commuter rail) to Back Bay station, or take the Green line to Copley or Prudential. You could also drive in and take your chances with metered street parking (free on Sundays), or pay for parking at one of the many public downtown lots.

Here are the most kid-friendly ways to spend time in the Copley/Back Bay area

1. Boston Public Library Main Branch

The children’s space at this historic library is wonderful. Kids can easily spend a few hours here browsing books and playing with toys and costumes. Story times are offered almost daily, in addition to other programs for all ages. Be sure to wander through the scenic outdoor courtyard and check out the stately Bates Hall as well. You can even grab lunch at the cafe or have a snack outdoors!

2. View Boston Prudential Tower

My kids had a blast riding the elevator up to the 52nd floor to get a bird’s eye view of the Boston skyline. They enjoyed spotting their favorite places to visit and had fun checking out the onsite exhibit as well. This activity requires an admission fee, but children 5 and under are free — and the view is worth it!

3. Prudential Center

Browse the shops at the Pru (as the locals call it). This venue houses many businesses and restaurants. Most notably, kids will have fun trying tasty treats at Eataly or playing at The Little Lovage Club. Enjoy the gorgeous seasonal decor as you walk through, and don’t forget to check the Pru’s event calendar for art exhibits and family-friendly activities!

4. Boston Duck Tours

Riding the famous amphibious duck boats while in Boston is a must! Kids can learn all about Boston’s famous landmarks and history during this approximately 1.5-hour land and water tour. Bonus: The operators will often give kids a chance to drive the vehicle once it’s on the water!

5. Newbury Street

Leave time to stroll down posh and proper Newbury Street, past the many shops, restaurants, and beautiful brownstones. It’s a lovely place to wander in any season — but fall and winter are an especially fun time of year, as the stores go all out with decorations. Be sure to pop into local favorite Trident Booksellers & Cafe, which offers a great children’s book selection and delicious brunch.

6. Christian Science Center Plaza

The beautiful reflection pool is definitely worth a visit. Kids can run off some energy here or cool off at the splashpad during the summertime. While you’re here, check out one of Boston’s coolest interactive exhibits — the Mapparium. This exhibit is housed inside the Mary Baker Eddy Library and allows you the opportunity to walk inside a three-story world globe. Kids visit free!

7. Symphony Hall

Make time to take in a concert at iconic Symphony Hall, home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Boston Pops. Family favorites include the Holiday Pops concert and Family Pops. The Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra (BYSO) performances are worth checking out as well.

8. Frieda Garcia Park Playground

This sweet little playground is located directly behind Back Bay station, across from Flour Bakery and Cafe. Grab a coffee and tasty treat while your kids get their energy out before your next destination. If you need lunch, The Friendly Toast is nearby.

9. Iconic Copley Square

Kids love playing on the big lawn in the heart of Copley Square! This is a prime spot to run around, enjoy a snack from a nearby food truck, and admire the beautiful buildings of the BPL, Trinity Church, and the John Hancock Tower. Park your stroller by the fountains on a sunny day, and let the little ones have a climb on the tortoise and the hare statues! There are many events and festivals held here throughout the year, like the Boston Book Festival, First Night Boston, and even child-focused walking tours.

10. Trinity Church

Every Friday you can enjoy a free organ concert in this beautiful historic building. Take a break from libraries and playgrounds and expose your kids to this cultural favorite.

We hope your kids enjoy this fun list of things to do in Boston’s Back Bay and Copley Square neighborhood!
