How’s this for a list of things we moms often talk about, worry about, and obsess about: putting ourselves last, having no time, struggling to squeeze in self-care, and negativity toward our bodies.
Relatable? Likely. And, very understandable. There are impossible standards to meet as mothers — and as women in general. One thing I never thought would help me break through some of these barriers to self-love and acceptance? Doing a boudoir shoot. And after taking the leap to make it happen, I can say I wholeheartedly recommend it.
I thought I would feel awkward, self-conscious, and highly critical. But, I’m here to tell you, the complete opposite experience is possible. And, trust me, whether you feel supremely confident in your body or not, having pictures taken in lingerie is probably not something many envision doing. But I left that studio feeling like a million bucks, and I hadn’t even seen the photos yet! Whether you do the photo shoot for your eyes only, as a gift for someone special, or to display proudly, it is more about the process than the end product.

If you want to lean in to your power and beauty in all shapes of womanhood and motherhood, contemplate a boudoir photo shoot! And consider these tips as you do:
- Invest in some outfits or lingerie that bring out your inner goddess, whatever that means for you!
- Get your hair and makeup done. Many boudoir photographers offer that as part of their services, and who doesn’t love a glam moment?!
- Bring a playlist that has hype-girl energy.
- Let go of any preconceived notions of what body you’re currently in or what it ever looked like before. To channel Peloton’s Jess Simms, you are a masterpiece and a work in progress.
- Trust the professionals — they know what looks good.

Speaking of the professionals, who better to recommend a photographer than other moms who’ve loved their experience?! Check out these Boston-area photographers who specialize in boudoir photos, and gift yourself a main character moment.
