- A CharlieCard: Planning to take the T? Make sure you have a CharlieCard handy for each adult passenger. CharlieCards can be purchased at most T stations. Children under the age of 11 ride free with an adult.
- A great bag: You’ll want a big bag to carry all your things, but you’ll want it to be light and comfortable to carry. The Lo & Sons Catalina Deluxe is my FAVORITE weekender bag. The bottom compartment is probably for shoes, but it also fits a travel potty perfectly (ask me how I know…).
- Travel potty: Have a toddler or preschooler? You need this. Bathrooms can be hard to find when walking around the city, and lines can be long. This travel potty and accompanying liners have saved my family many, many times. We keep it tucked into the bottom of our Lo & Sons bag!
- Wet wipes: Kids are gross. Public spaces are gross. Bring the wipes.
- Water bottles: These water bottles are relatively leak-proof and are super light to carry. Fill them up in the morning so you aren’t always stopping to buy a thirsty kid a drink.
- Sunscreen: This one is our favorite because it goes on easily and quickly.

- Brightly colored clothing: I always thought I’d be the mom who dressed my children in adorable matching Vineyard Vines clothing, but it turns out I’m the mom who just wants to be able to find my kid in a crowd really easily. Brightly colored shirts are SO helpful for any vacation or family outing!
- An umbrella stroller: Boston’s streets are often hard to maneuver with a big stroller (old cobblestones can be finicky), and some MBTA train stations do not have elevators. If you can, invest in an umbrella stroller to bring so that you can easily carry it when necessary.
